Kimunye Hike
Located near Castle Forest on the slopes of Mount Kenya is this serene trail. Kimunye is in Kirinyaga county, about 140km from Nairobi off the Nyeri Nairobi highway approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes’ drive.
The trail is an easy one with almost level gradient until we reach the water fall that is hidden in a thick forest cover. It follows the electric fence of Castle forest for about 6km before we turn towards the thunderous waterfall.
Total hiking distance is approximately 12km and this can be considered a beginner moderate hike.
The soothing rustling of the trees, the fresh air, the serenity of the forest is what makes it worth the while.
The descent to the waterfall is short but slippery and once at the bottom we’re greeted by the waterfall that falls down several meters before the water spreads around a small rocky island. Due to the rich fertile soils and the thick forest covers, the soil is very loose coupled with the rainfall in the area made the descent very challenging.
The water is sparkling clean.
To get to the island, we had to cross the river on foot in the cool and refreshing waters.
Once here, you can even swim under the waterfall or just nearby in the waters that collect below the falls, but the water is very cold.
After finishing with the waterfall, we continue on across vast tea farms bordering the forest and finish the hike.
