Ol Pejeta Conservancy

smart

Situated on the foothill of snow-capped Mount Kenya in Nanyuki, Laikipia County, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is most famous for protecting the world’s last two northern white rhinos. It is about 4 hours’ drive from Nairobi, a beautiful road trip through Central Kenya as you view snow-capped Mt. Kenya on one side, and Aberdare ranges on the other side.

Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to the Big 5 – lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino (black and white) – as well as cheetah, wild dog, giraffes. There are scores of zebra and antelopes all around the park. The Conservancy boasts of  the largest black rhino sanctuary in East Africa. It also houses the two remaining northern white rhino in the world.

There are several beautiful bird species to watch. Besides other birds, you’ll spot flocks of guinea fowls and quails across the grasslands.

The Sweetwaters Chimpanzee Sanctuary is situated here which provides a haven for orphaned, abandoned, and rescued chimpanzees. It is the only place in Kenya where chimpanzees can be seen.

While at the conservancy, you get an opportunity to feed and pet a blind black rhino-Baraka.

Beautiful birds that you’ll spot all over the park and especially around the Morani restaurant.

Then there are Chimps and this particular one (named George) was very cheeky. They are super intelligent and very aggressive and we were informed that sometimes they are able to short-circuit the electric fence and escape from the sanctuary.

Then the elephants in all their glory!

The mama lion and the babies

Giraffes shielding from the sweltering heat

Buffalos and their baby

Zebras too and their baby

And off course Rhinos
