Aberdares Water Falls

smart

Aberdares National Park is host the tallest waterfall in Kenya, Karuru Waterfall, which has 3 tiers or steps that total to 273m high. From Nairobi it takes about 2hours’ drive to get the park gate manned by the Kenya Wildlife Service.

To get to Karuru falls we hike 3km downhill on well paved roads with well-made steps so that people don’t slide downhill.

The bus takes us inside the park up to a drop-off point where we begin the hike.

Being a national park, we were accompanied by an armed ranger as we expected to encounter wild animals, but we were not lucky.

Elevation change is approximately 200m making it reasonably steep especially when going uphill back to where we started. The total distance to the falls and back to the start is 6km.

Karuru waterfall, besides being the highest, is very magnificent on the backdrop of lush green forest cover and clear blue skies.

We take a break to drink of the clean, sparkling river water as we crisscross between the various well-constructed viewpoints to satisfy our adventurers hearts. The smell of fresh air, sounds of the water flowing, magnificent sceneries, sounds of the water falling off the rocks and cliffs, rustling of the trees, chirping of the birds and sounds of wild creatures made the experience awe-inspiring.

Once we retrun to the drop-off points, we board the bus to the other two falls that are not far apart.

We visit the thunderous Chania Falls. The distance from the bus drop-off point is less than a kilometer downhill along well constructed wooden stairs and guard rails.

We sum up the day with a view of the beautiful Magura falls (also known as Queen’s falls)
