Marafa Hell’s Kitchen

Hell’s Kitchen is located in Marafa, a town approximately 40km from Malindi Town.

The colored Marafa jagged gorges, pillars and depressions is what makes Hell’s kitchen a spectacle.

The colors of the sandstone reveal whites, pinks, oranges, and deep crimsons, making the feature particularly striking at sundown, when tones of the ribbed sandstone gullies are highlighted and mirrored by the rays of the sun. The ravines, pinnacles and stone pillars of varied heights leaves you in awe of the unique nature of the Hell’s Kitchen.

Due to the limited air circulation beneath the gorges, the place gets extremely hot in the early hours of the day making it inaccessible from a close distance hence “Hell’s Kitchen”. You can only enter the canyon in the late afternoon. The attraction is its enchanting formations, interesting colors, the rich history as given by the locals who charge a small entry fee and a tour guide. The locals have a theory of how it’s believed to have been formed following a drowning of a wealthy family that despised their poor fellow villagers. The variety of soil colors are used by the locals for decorations.

Its an ancestral sanctuary where the locals believe that by placing your both hands, you can leave all your misfortunes.

It also provides a grand location for watching sunset over the beautiful scenery with the sun rays amplifying the various colors of the canyon.

Being at the canyon is peaceful, awe-striking and takes about an hour to tour through

You also get to see the baboons that have made the canyon their home. They spend the night in its warmth and get out during the day to eat from the surrounding trees according to the guide.
