Mida Creek, Watamu

Mida Creek, one of Watamu’s hidden gems, is a tidal inlet stretching inland from the ocean into Arabuko – Sokoke forest in Kenya. Mida Creek is a broad water tidal creek, which is 32 Km2, surrounded by extensive and various mangrove species.

This creek has wide, healthy beds of seagrass and coral, home to many species of fish and feeding sea turtles, while in the mangroves smaller streams and inlets provide a refuge for crabs and birdlife.

Mida is a stopover point for many migratory birds and an essential protected area for their survival. This makes it one of the most important and beautiful natural attractions on the Kenyan coast.

The creek is also an incredible kayaking destination, with endless small channels and passages through the mangroves to explore where kingfishers hunt in the shallow waters and fish eagles perch in the overhead trees. You can also use the canoe to explore as you experience the serenity of the mangrove forest as you learn more about the mangroves and the crabs from the tour guide.

The boat anchors at the Sudi Island for lunch. The island is managed by the local community who provides the kayaking, canoeing, meals and locally made jewerelly at a fee.

The sea foods – crabs, lobsters, shrimps- are the main delicacies here and chicken, served with coconut rice and a cold drink.

The mangrove forest provides beautiful back drop for the clear blue ocean waters and the white sand.
