Watamu Marine National Park
Pristine white-sand beaches and reef-protected lagoons line the Watamu Marine National Park. It’s a haven of corals, fish, and other aquatic marine life.
The park is part of a complex of marine and tidal habitats along the Kenya’s north coast with rich and diverse bird life, fish, turtles.
It is located about 140 km north of Mombasa, in Kilifi County.
The Park is also home to three species of sea turtle who also nest on the Marine Park beaches. They move at a very high speed that I wasn’t able get a shot.
There are many variety of fish that the local fishermen catch and prepare the dishes at the food kiosks along the beach. Some of the fish have interesting local names. The funniest one is called “vuvuzela” fish due to its long mouth that resembles the vuvuzela.
As we await clearance by Kenya Wildlife Service and board our boat to explore the park, we are treated to a view of baby sharks. Apparently, the sharks lay their eggs under the reefs that hatch and grow and only move to the deep sea when they are large enough. Baby sharks are harmless and would come to our feet while we stood still.
The boat ride takes us for dolphins viewing and this time round, they were many and were graced with their show of fun as the jumped up and dived into the ocean in large groups in slow motion. What a spectacle!
We were able to enjoy the white sandy beaches, snorkeling, swimming and sunbathing at our own leisure .While snorkeling, you are able to see the various species of colorful
