Ragia Forest Hike

smart

Ragia forest trail in the Ragia forest is by far the greatest bamboo forest exposure I hav experienced. At approximately 90km from Nairobi, Ragia forest is found with sprawling bamboo forest and other indigenous trees that provide a dense underground cover. Ragia forest, located in South Kinangop, approximately 2 hours’ drive from Nairobi forms part of the Aberdare forest ecosystem that has a huge spectrum of flora and fauna.

You’ll know that you you’ve arrived at Ragia when you spot sprawling dams and at the entrance there is Sasuma Dam which supplies water to Nairobi. It’s managed by the Kenya Forest Service.

A waterfall chase like no other, the beautiful bamboos providing awesome canopies, the chirping of the birds, awesome flowers, wonderful rock formations and caves stare at the breathtaking waterfall as you take it all in surrounded by tall trees calming your mind and soul.

The trail proceeds deep into thick bamboo where we spot many elephant trails down the valley. The hike is approximately 12km long and moderate until you start the descent to the water fall. The descent is long and steep with several slippery sections and can take up to 30 minutes to get down to the river

At the bottom of the valley is this fresh and crisp stream passing through the huge rocks sandwiched by indigenous tall trees that provide a dense cover. After crossing the streams and going around and climbing some rocks and caves, they give way to a magnificent waterfall.

The fall provide a pool for swimming lovers, the solid rocks where you can sit down and deep your feet as you enjoy the serenity only experienced in the sounds of waterfall and river flow.

From the waterfall, the trail leads you out of the forest through the thick bamboo forest while walking along a forest road. The whole circuit takes approximately 6 hours.

During this trek, all I could think about is how Kenya is endowed with such wonderful places that everybody should aspire to explore. Nature was provided to us to enjoy.

There is definitely more to discover!
